The firmament made

καὶ ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸ στερέωμα· καὶ διεχώρισεν ὁ θεὸς ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ ὕδατος ὃ ἦν ὑποκάτω τοῦ στερεώματος, καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ ὕδατος τοῦ ἐπάνω τοῦ στερεώματος.
God's word from 1:6 is now carried out: he *makes* (ποιέω) the firmament, and divides the water it was set to divide. The clause "the water above the firmament" is the ancient cosmology's upper ocean, source of rain and, in the Flood story, of the windows of heaven.
