καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἀδάμ Ἡ γυνή, ἣν ἔδωκας μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ, αὕτη μοι ἔδωκεν ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου, καὶ ἔφαγον.
Adam's answer to a direct question about his own deed deflects twice in one breath: first onto "the woman," then further onto God himself ("whom YOU gave to be with me"). The blame runs uphill before it runs sideways — the first recorded act of self-justification takes aim, however obliquely, at the giver of the gift.
