τῷ δὲ Ἀδὰμ εἶπεν Ὅτι ἤκουσας τῆς φωνῆς τῆς γυναικός σου καὶ ἔφαγες ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου οὗ ἐνετειλάμην σοι τούτου μόνου μὴ φαγεῖν, ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἔφαγες, ἐπικατάρατος ἡ γῆ ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις σου· ἐν λύπαις φάγῃ αὐτὴν πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ζωῆς σου·
Adam's curse is not on his own body directly, as the serpent's was, but on the ground, and mediated through it — his labor, not his person, is made hard. The specificity of the charge ("you listened to the voice of your wife," a phrase repeated word for word from v.11's question about the tree) makes clear that the sin under judgment is not eating as such but the abdication of the responsibility God gave Adam directly in 2:16-17.
