καὶ ἐξέβαλεν τὸν Ἀδὰμ καὶ κατῴκισεν αὐτὸν ἀπέναντι τοῦ παραδείσου τῆς τρυφῆς, καὶ ἔταξεν τὰ χερουβὶν καὶ τὴν φλογίνην ῥομφαίαν τὴν στρεφομένην φυλάσσειν τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ ξύλου τῆς ζωῆς.
The chapter's closing image: humanity cast out, and the way back barred not by distance but by armed guard — χερουβίν (a transliterated Hebrew plural, כְּרֻבִים, kərūḇîm, guardian creatures of God's presence, later carved above the ark's mercy-seat, Exod 25:18-22) and ῥομφαία φλογίνη, a "flaming sword," turning to cover every side. The tree of life, untouched since v.22, is now sealed off entirely — until Revelation's closing chapters reopen it without guard or flame, freely available "to those who wash their robes" (Rev 22:2,14), the last book of the Christian Bible answering the last image of its first.
