καὶ ἴδεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς τὴν γῆν, καὶ ἦν κατεφθαρμένη, ὅτι κατέφθειρεν πᾶσα σὰρξ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
The chapter’s most quoted verse, cited in later Jewish and Christian tradition as the definitive statement of universal moral collapse before the Flood. φθείρω/καταφθείρω wordplay runs through this verse and v.13, v.17: the earth is corrupted (perfect participle, a settled state) because all flesh had corrupted (aorist, the completed act) its own way. πᾶσα σὰρξ, “all flesh”, echoes v.3’s naming of humanity’s mortality — now naming its crime instead.
