Cursed be Canaan

καὶ εἶπεν Ἐπικατάρατος Χανάαν· παῖς οἰκέτης ἔσται τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ.
ἐπικατάρατος ("cursed") is the same rare adjective Paul quotes twice from Deuteronomy in Galatians — "Cursed is everyone who does not abide..." (Gal 3:10) and "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree" (Gal 3:13, of Christ). Swete punctuates with a colon after "Χανάαν," so "παῖς οἰκέτης" (literally "a servant, a household-slave") together form the predicate — echoing the Hebrew idiom "a slave of slaves," the lowest possible rank.
