'I have bought you, my daughter, and soon you will be mine.'
The heartbreaking paradox of the whole book: to free his child, the father must buy her — 'comprei-te' — and speak of owning her, 'you will be mine,' precisely as the means of setting her free. Love has to borrow the grammar of slavery to undo it.
