Mas esse siô Francisco, que ahi anda agora, cruz nelle!.. é a peor peste que tem botado os pés nesta casa.
'But that Mr. Francisco who goes about now, curse him! — he's the worst plague ever to set foot in this house.'
Francisco, the current overseer, is named at last — 'the worst plague ever to set foot in this house.' He is the human instrument of the coming rigour, the whip made flesh. Joaquina crosses herself against him ('cruz nelle') as against the devil, tying him to her earlier verdict that captivity itself is the devil's work.
