'But, as I was saying, Mr. Miguel loved Juliana dearly, and worked and worked until he had saved money to free her.'
The doubled 'worked and worked' carries years of a free man's labour bent to one purpose: buying the woman he loved out of slavery. It is the same thing Miguel is trying to do for his daughter in Cap. VI — the father's lifelong project is to purchase his family's freedom, again and again, from men who keep refusing.
