Isaura does not even know her crime; she seeks 'o motivo,' the reason, for a coldness she cannot account for. The cruelty of slander is exactly this — the accused is never told the charge and so can never answer it. She grasps only that the 'affeição e confiança' Malvina 'sempre lhe mostrára' has been withdrawn, and she cannot see the hand of Rosa behind it.
