A note on this passage

Isaura's answer is not tears now but words: 'palavras amargas, e terriveis exprobrações,' bitter words and terrible reproaches. Prostrate and defenceless a moment ago, she meets his grovelling with defiance, arraigning him. 'Exprobração' — a reproach that charges someone with their wrong — makes her the accuser and him the accused, even at his feet. Her only weapon is her voice, and she wields it unbowed.
