A note on this passage

The turning point of the whole siege: 'vendo emfim que eram infructiferos todos esses meios' — seeing at last that every means was fruitless. Bribery, vows, grovelling, all have failed against Isaura's steadfastness. It is a victory, though a terrible one, for it is precisely her refusal that will summon the violence. The 'brandos e suasivos' means having failed, only force remains, and the chapter tilts toward the whip.
