The grovelling lover, rebuffed, becomes the raging tyrant: 'retirou-se cheio de colera, vomitando as mais tremendas ameaças.' The verb 'vomitando,' spewing, spitting up, makes his threats a physical spilling of bile — the true self surfacing now that seduction has failed. The 'ameaças' he vomits are the hinge to the chapter's last paragraph, where he begins, coldly, to carry them out.
