The threats begin to bite the same day: 'para dar a essas ameaças começo de execução.' The first punishment is demotion — sent to labour 'entre as fiandeiras,' among the spinning-women of the senzala workroom. It is a calculated humiliation: the fair, educated Isaura, raised almost as a daughter, is thrust down into the anonymous drudgery of the enslaved. The gentle means having failed, degradation is the opening move of force.
