The escalation of cruelty is in the manner: he now 'affectava' — put on, deliberately performed — an 'indifferença desdenhosa,' a disdainful indifference, as if Isaura's fate and his wife's anguish were beneath his notice. The affectation is the insult; treating the matter as trivial denies Malvina even the dignity of a real quarrel.
