So if the heedless hunter felt his hat suddenly decked with a red feather whistling through the air; if he saw a dart snatch away the fruit he reached to pick; if he stopped, startled, before a long feathered arrow that, loosed in a high arc, fell two paces before him as if to bar his way and serve as a boundary-marker — he was not surprised.
