Na ocasião em que se abriram os alicerces da casa, os obreiros descobriram um socavão profundo talhado na pedra; D. Antônio como homem previdente, lembrando-se da necessidade que teria para o futuro de não contar senão com os seus próprios recursos, mandou aproveitar essa abóbada natural, e fazer dela um depósito que pudesse conter algumas arrobas de pólvora.
When the foundations of the house were opened, the workmen uncovered a deep cavern hewn in the rock; D. Antônio, as a provident man, remembering the need he would have in future to count on nothing but his own resources, had that natural vault turned to use and made of it a store that could hold some arrobas of powder.
